Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1 / What should I expect?
Be without expectations! The services we provide are designed not only to aid in physical healing and recovery but also to promote mental relaxation. Floating gives your mind the freedom to wander without limitations. Placing expectations on the experience can interfere with the natural path your mind seeks to follow. Floating offers a unique experience, one where your body finds itself in a setting it may not have encountered since birth. It could take a little time to adjust, it's not often we are in an environment free from stimulation. We encourage clients to stretch, try various positions, or gently push off the walls of the tank in a calm, rhythmic manner. We only ask that you keep an open mind as everyone is so uniquely different. Some may exit the experience feeling calm, others may feel energized. The experience is entirely our own, and like some people, it may take a couple sessions to find their rhythm.
2 / Is the water clean?
After each float, all the saltwater in the tank is cycled through an advanced filtering process 3-4 times and also includes additional layers of UV light treatment. These filters are fully effective to one micron, which is 100 times smaller than a human hair. In addition, the 1,000 lbs of epsom salt that are dissolved into the water acts as a natural disinfectant. We also maintain a safe level (100 ppm) of hydrogen peroxide, a powerful disinfectant. Water sanitation is extremely important to us, so we continually test and monitor it to make sure it is perfectly clean and safe, so you can relax knowing the environment is completely sterile. The rooms are thoroughly cleaned, dried, disinfected, and inspected before each float session. We are all about the details and we know a clean environment makes relaxing and letting go that much easier.
3 / That's a lot of salt! What is magnesium sulfate?
It's magic. Magnesium sulfate is a mineral known to support detoxification, enhance the immune system, stimulate the release of endorphins (the body’s "feel-good" chemicals), and offer relief from both physical and emotional stress and fatigue. Epsom salt, which is a form of magnesium sulfate, is non-toxic. It helps ease muscle soreness by breaking down lactic acid and can even soften the skin, potentially reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Magnesium plays a crucial role in maintaining enzyme function and supports around 312 bodily processes, helping everything run smoothly. A significant number of Americans suffer from magnesium deficiency, which is linked to a variety of health concerns. Sulfate, too, is essential for your body’s function. It aids in the development of brain tissue and joint proteins and helps fortify the walls of the digestive tract [Check out the Epsom Salt Council Organization for more insights].
4 / How long is a session?
Everyone’s First Float Session at Abundant Health Float and Day Spa starts with a first float walkthrough by an Abundant Health staff member, after which you will put your ear plugs in, shower in your private room, then enter your float pod for 1 hour/60 minutes in the water. Once the hour is up you will need to shower (again) to remove all the magnesium sulfate solution. We ask that you are mindful of other clients waiting for their appointment. After showering and getting dressed, you can finish getting ready in the restroom area then bask in your post-float glow. After a First Float Session, the Float sessions are also 60 minutes; however, we do offer upgrades to a 90-minute float session or 120 minute. Fun Fact: Your skin will not get wrinkly! Epsom salt will inhibit the water from saturating your skin.
5 / When should I arrive for my float session?
We understand that life is crazy! If this is a First Float Session, please arrive 10-15 minutes early. There is “paperwork” for each first-time session at Abundant Health Float and Day Spa, but once you have filled it out, you are done! If this is not your first time and/or you completed the waivers ahead of time, then arriving 5 to 7 minutes early is best so you are able to take a few minutes to wind down before your session begins. Entering your float room in a relaxed state will maximize your float experience. After your 60 minutes of bliss, it can be jolting to jump right back into the chaos of your day. After exiting your private float session, take time to soak in the experience that you just had: ponder any thoughts and simply bask in the amazing post-float afterglow.
6 / Can I eat before I float?
We recommend having a light meal or snack a few hours before the float, so you won’t be interrupted by a grumbling stomach or won’t be needing to use the bathroom in the middle of your session. We do not recommend eating a full meal before, or fasting prior to your float as it could result in potential nausea or dizziness. Also, we suggest you avoid caffeine a few hours prior to entering the pod.
7 / What should I bring?
Nothing! All you need to bring is yourself! When floating, you'll be in your birthday suit. You are in your own private room with a private shower and we provide everything you need for your float: towels, a cup of water, earplugs, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. We ask that guests refrain from wearing swimsuits in the float tank to prevent contaminants like detergent, oils, lotions, and chemicals from entering the magnesium sulfate solution. These residues as well as fabric dyes, elastic, and synthetic fibers can interfere with the high concentration of magnesium sulfate in the float solution, altering it’s effectiveness and clogging the filtration system, reducing its ability to properly clean the water. To maintain the purity of the float experience and ensure proper tank function, we ask all guests to float without a swimsuit, in their birthday suit, allowing the water to remain as pure as possible. For guests enjoying multiple services, we will have a robe, slippers, and a basket for you to wear in between your services so you won’t have to get dressed to get undressed again.
8 / What happens if I fall asleep?
It’s totally safe, happens all the time, and will likely be one of the best naps of your life! You won’t miss a thing, as your body is reaping all the physical benefits while you relax. Also, we won’t forget about you! When the water starts moving, you definitely know it is over. Studies have proven that one hour of sleep in a float tank is worth four hours of sleep outside of one!
9 / How much time do I have to shower after my float?
We got you covered! We have already allotted the shower time for before and after you enjoy your full 60-minutes in the float tank. We expect you will emerge from your room 10 to 15 minutes after your session has ended. We have mirrors, and blow dryers, located outside the float rooms so you can finish getting ready outside. This allows us to reset the rooms for the next float sessions. *Please provide your own hairbrush/comb
10 / What if I am claustrophobic?
People with claustrophobia consistently report no problems with floating. Our staff does a very thorough walkthrough with clients: feel free to let them know if you have any concerns or more questions. You can float with lights on or off, and music on or off – buttons for these are right by your side. You can also simply keep the pod's clamshell lid open, or cracked with a towel should you feel the need, and can exit the pod at anytime.
11 / Can I float if I don't know how to swim?
You absolutely can! Here's why.. The water in the tank is filled with a high concentration of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate), which makes the water very buoyant, allowing you to float effortlessly without any effort or skill. The tank is designed to keep you safely suspended, and there is no need to swim or stay in any particular position. Additionally, the water is shallow enough with 8- 10 inches of solution so you can't fully submerge, making it easy for you to simply sit up and a completely safe environment for non-swimmers.
12 / Can I float while pregnant?
Yes: it’s amazing! Pregnancy is probably the craziest, most stressful period of a person’s life. Pregnant women have used floating to relieve the stress on their bodies for decades. The buoyancy of the water helps relieve pressure on the joints and muscles and can promote better blood circulation, helping to reduce swelling and improve oxygen flow to both the mother and baby. If you’re in your first trimester or have any concerns, please consult with your doctor before booking a float. Let your doctor know that the water temperature is around your outside body temperature, so never above 95°F.
13 / How often should I float?
We say it takes about three floats to really find your floating style. Part of that is discovering your preferences and getting used to the process (avoiding water into your eyes, how to keep your mind from attaching to that silly thing that happened in 7th grade…) Magnesium is absorbed through your skin, making the first float an amazing experience, but it gets better the more you do it. Our packages are the best way for you to experience several floats; then, if you are hooked, we would love for you to become a member. You are investing in us and we want to invest in you so we would love to walk you through the different membership options that get you lots of perks. We wouldn’t recommend over-committing and saying you are going to float once a week. Membership is recommended for a couple, family, or avid athlete. However, we do have a handful of dedicated members that will experiment and float everyday for a week. A month can slip away from us so quickly: we believe that one float a month is the perfect tool to add to your self-care routine.
